Yakutian Laika

The breed made for life and work in extreme temperatures that reaches from under -50°C during the winter and over 30°C during the summer.

The Yakutian Laika is a charming and adaptable breed who enjoy life the most when they get to work strenuously with its human.

Being an old aboriginal breed from the Republic of Sakha (Jakutsk) in Russia where around 40% of the region lies north of the Arctic Circle and is covered by permafrost,

the breed was mainly used as a draft dog and a hunting dog, but also as a herding dog, guard dog, companion and bed warmer.

The many areas where the breed was used created a versatile workaholic with a great on/off switch who easily adapts to the living situations of today after adequate activity.

They are still a primitive breed that has retained a lot of what is needed to live in a country with extreme conditions.

The main goal for breeders of the Yakutian Laika should be to preserve the diversity in the gene pool which has been made hard for breeders outside of Russa since sanctions were put in place by several kennel clubs under the FCI due to Russia waging war against Ukraine, most of the genetic diversity still resides in Russia.

As this is a Russian breed that has relatively recently been approved as a registered breed, we would like to warmly recommend the Russian breed club's website. On this website there is a lot of interesting information about both breeding goats, breed management, the breed and working with genetic conservation work, etc.
