France - the early years

28.11.2023

France had to wait until the end of the 1914-1918 war to see the first Samoyed brought back from the Russian front by a French officer appear. This dog, which was biscuit colored and named Fingal, produced the first national champions.

Before the Second World War, Mr. Fornier de Savignac, an eminent breeder of Samoyeds, provided subjects for alpine hunters, who used them in particular for resupply in high mountains. We also know that Doctor Delort, who lived in Cantal, used to harness his Samoyeds to treat isolated patients. At the start of the war, all of Mr. de Savignac's subjects were requisitioned, and most died as heroes at Narvik.

Hannie Wink 2013: comte de Savignac was a judge. On the internet I found a book he has written: Annuaire cynologique 1935.

In the Christmassedition of the Dutch magazine "De Hond' 1933 there is an article he wrote. He loved the coloured dogs too: "Bien que des chiens de couleur, aient été importé en Angleterre la selection faite par les leveurs anglais, s'est spécialisé uniquement sur la robe blanche unicolore, c'est regrettable car tout en reconnaissant le splendide beauté d'un magnifique fourrure blanche, il serait particulièrement intéressant, de compléter l'élevage de cette merveilleuse race de chiens, par la recherche des fourrures de tentes diverses."

Constantin Brâncuși and samoyed Polaire

Polaire might have been the only girl that truly and openly had Constantin Brâncuși's heart. She was a beautiful Samoyed bitch, as white as his famous whitewashed studio in Montparnasse, Paris.
