The first samoyed in Finland was Virkku I, imported from the Kola Peninsula by Selim Mäkelä/kennel Turjan in the 1890s. She was mated with the male Putsok, also from Russia, and she died in 1912 at 16 years of age. Kennel Turjan started the breeding with these two dogs, and ended in 1953 when Mr Mäkelä died.
